8 Reasons Progressives Are Wary Of Bernie Sanders' Bandwagon

Posted by Pile (76822 views) Add this story to MyYahoo Add this article to del.icio.us Submit article to Reddit Add story to Furl Add story to StumbleUpon [E-Mail link]

EDIT: Note that this article was originally written prior to the 2016 election, it still contains very useful information on the dynamics of the upcoming 2020 election...

*BSA Exclusive Editorial*

I dig Bernie Sanders. I've always loved him and his perspective. I agree with 99% of what he promotes in terms of long-term policy. But I still find myself uneasy with his candidacy. I will vote for whoever gets the Democratic nomination, but I'm not convinced people understand the dynamics and what's really in play right now?

As many of those on the left and the "disenfranchised" are "feeling the Bern" and hopping on the Bernie Sanders bandwagon, theres a schism developing among those who pine for social change.

It seemed hard to fathom that a candidate that has been so succinctly enumerating many of the problems people on the left, center and right have been harping about has now become so contentious?

I gotta be honest.. to me it feels like another Deja Vu moment. How I felt when I heard all my friends get so excited about Ralph Nader in 2000, and how his fresh rhetoric was going to change the political landcape...

It doesn't seem to make sense. Even among the editors at BSAlert, there's contention on the value of a Sanders presidency. Allow us to provide you with what we think are some troubling issues with Sanders and why we feel, as much as we love what he says, In my opinion (though not the opinion of everybody here) Sanders is a pied piper more than he is a path to change...

If all you want is Bernie elected; if all you care about is "sending the message" ok, I can't argue with that. But if you care about actually seeing his policy ideas executed, and moving in a more progressive direction during the next 4-8 years, you have to at least be open to these arguments...

Happy New Year! Who Are YOU Going To Hate In 2017?

2017: Resolutions, OUT. Enemies, IN.

In the past, people picked a new year's resolution. That seems kinda passe now. The last few years, I think whether knowingly or not, the new mantra is, "Pick your enemy." What are you going to hate next year? Immigrants? The Federal Reserve Bank? Liberals? Conservatives? Russia? Congress? Blacks? China? Abortion? Muslims? Christians? Atheists? White male privilege? Obama? The Two-Party-System? Cops? Trump? The Electoral College? The UN? Guns? Hillary? Environmentalists? ISIS? Big Banks? Rape Culture? Unions? We all do it whether we realize it or not.

"Hate" is big business. Hate is the easiest emotion in the world to turn on. It's always there like a seasoned wick ready to be ignited by the slightest spark. Hate can turn even the laziest slacktivist into an online-petition-signing maniac; a Facebook-meme-posting army of one! Good luck "love" and "hope" with your teeny tiny little heart and smileyface emoticons. You're no match for hate.

So who and what's worthy of your hate in 2016?

Let's discuss..

The Federal Procurement Data System posted its latest information on hurricane-related contract awards. The total spent on post-Katrina contracts as of June 23 stands at $1.9 billion and this doesn't even count most FEMA and Defense Department contracts.

So how wisely is the government spending money?

Let's see. Remember that cool night-time photo-op Bush did in front of Jackson Square in New Orleans? Where he promised to completely fix the levees (which was never done). It cost $61,000 just for the generators, air conditioners and trailers. Oh wait, $10,000+ for the light towers for that, and we're just getting started.

How about $21,000 for a 5-drawer filing cabinet! (Brought to New Orleans from Illinois, because obviously there were no 5-drawer legal cabinets anywhere in the southern United States).

Oh yea, there's more...

The truth is every day, major stories are "buried" by the mainstream media because they don't serve the interest of their executives or corporate sponsors. In many cases, the "Internet buzz" ends up becoming so substantive that even the mainstream must acknowledge these stories or call more obvious attention to their questionable journalistic standards. We're going to keep track of these stories to show that there are many superior sources of news and information than the corrupted mainstream institutions.

Since maybe some of you don't have the patience for a three-hour telecast, here are my reflections on the event.

First, the monologue. Generally, it was funny. Politically speaking, it was reasonably balanced. During his monologue, Chris Rock did a good ten-minute riff on Bush. ("Just imagine if you work at the Gap…and when you close up for the day, your register is $75 trillion dollars short.") The audience seemed to love it (surprised?). He did a very mild jab at Michael Moore, but only after saying nice things about his movie.

He also said some nice things about the film "The Passion of the Christ," and Jesus in general, to provide balance. And on a more personal level, if he ever zinged anybody, like Cuba Gooding, he managed to turn it around on himself before he was done.

I'd avoid this toy until Apple and their OEMs make it more reliable and compatible with standard PC configurations.

EDIT: This post is now well over 10 years old, but it's still relevant today.... So we will keep it as is...

With the Internet overflowing with various pundits speculating on "What went wrong in the 2004 election?", I'd like to add my theory. Unlike other theories dancing around which take into account partisan intent, what people are thinking and the use of lots of tin-foil hats, I think there's a very straightforward path that shows how and why the American populace has developed into the polarized mindset that was responsible for the current political climate.

This is the first part of a two part rambling diatribe. The first part outlines what I feel are the two major causes of most of the problems. The second part outlines ideas I have on solving the problems in a realistic way given an environment that is vehemently hostile towards equitible debate.
