If they were to remake The Wizard of Oz today, I think we'd find one of Dorothy's most famous lines would change. "Thank goodness we're not in Kansas any more, Toto." It seems many people it Kansas still want to repress women as they were in the 1840's, 100 years before this movie first came out.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Kansas activities officials are investigating a religious school's refusal to let a female referee call a boys' high school basketball game. The Kansas State High School Activities Association said referees reported that Michelle Campbell was preparing to officiate at St. Mary's Academy near Topeka on Feb. 2 when a school official insisted that Campbell could not call the game.

The reason given, according to the referees: Campbell, as a woman, could not be put in a position of authority over boys because of the academy's beliefs.

Some people take college football rivalries pretty seriously. Aggressive trash talking or some mild vandalism are not uncommon when some see the colors of their school's hated rival. Some folks, however, are so serious they'll literally tear your balls off.

There is a peculiar disease that affects a certain group of people every few years. Those people? Olympic organizers. The disease? Dumb logo mania. Whether it's cavorting panda bears or a truly ridiculous torch/bee/spring combination, the people who are tasked with coming up with an Olympic logo, a logo which is meant to show the entire world that your city is not going to screw up the Olympics, can be some real morons. And the right honorable Brits are no different.

It's almost too ironic to be believed: Germany, the nation most associated with beer drinking, may be in danger of running out of the frothy brew before the World Cup soccer finals roll around. And it's not even the German fans who are causing the drought--it's the English fans drinking the local braureien dry. Even the German bartenders, who see some beer drunk on an average day, are astonished by the capacity of the English.

It looks like I'm not alone. While I enjoy the olympics and the figure skating has been interesting, I still am not sure what to make over some of these outfits. What are the designers thinking? It used to be skating costumes were merely "gay"-looking. Now they've moved into the realm of some kind of weird mushroom-induced, Michael Jacksonfied, when-animals-attack, Caligula-inspired, barbie-doll, mermaid-transexual, lion king afterbirth nightmare. What is the deal?

The latest missive to get spread throughout peoples' inboxes seems to be a goofy rumor that the outcome of the last home game for the Washington Redskins football team has accurately indicated whether incumbant has won or lost in the last fifteen election cycles. Snopes has looked into this, and while it technically may be true, that doesn't make it little more than a big steaming pile of BS.

Will American Gymnast Keep Gold Medal He Didn't Earn?

It seems the U.S. Olympic officials have thrown a hissy fit in light of the International Gymnastics Federation writing to Olympian Paul Hamm and requesting he give his gold medal to Korean Yang Tae-young, who was determined to be the winner of the event after an analysis of the scores and the correction of a judging error.

The buzz online seems to be split between arrogance that Hamm can't possibly be at fault, and that other errors were made that weren't corrected, and the notion that an honorable competitor would never accept a medal he didn't earn. Personally, it seems like giving the medal to the superior competitor would not only be the right thing to do, but a great PR move on the part of Hamm. Will he do so? I saw the competition and Hamm's performance was nowhere near as good as others.

IOC ever-vigilant against "advertising terrorism"

[Olympics]
Athens seems like a pretty cool place to be for the Olympics, but it seems a lot of people are upset about the International Olympic Committee's obsessively facist rules to enforce what they call "Clean Venue Policy" - a nice way of saying you can't have even the slightest mention of products/logos that may conflict with a paying sponsor. One frustrated atendee said, "I was asked to turn my shirt inside out at the entrance to a match, because the logo was too large and I was sitting in front-row seats, where the TV cameras would have caught sight of me for sure,"

It's bad enough koke has taken over the event and forced even the althetes themselves to drink from label-stripped cans and bottles if they're not of a particular brand, but the IOC has gone even more overboard, policing everything from computer screen savers to spare change.

Apparently, to protect its lucrative broadcasting contracts, the IOC is restricting most Olympic competitors and support personnel from publishing any first-hand accounts, pictures or related media online for the duration of the games. Again, freedom of expression seems to take a back seat to profit generation.

Many of you may be excited about the 2004 Summer Olympics in Greece. Other sites such as BBC have live coverage that they're forced to restrict access to from people in the United States.
