It's almost too ironic to be believed: Germany, the nation most associated with beer drinking, may be in danger of running out of the frothy brew before the World Cup soccer finals roll around. And it's not even the German fans who are causing the drought--it's the English fans drinking the local braureien dry. Even the German bartenders, who see some beer drunk on an average day, are astonished by the capacity of the English.

Yes, in Nuremberg, which has hosted a few drunken rallies in its day, an estimated 70,000 English fans drank 1.2 million pints of beer--an average of 17 pints each. Astonished bar keeper Herrmann Murr said: "Never have I seen so many drink so much in such little time."

In Cologne, host to a match between England and Sweden, the local beer actually did run out. Presumably the shopkeepers were able to keep up with demand using imported beer.

Stuttgart reports that an extra 900,000 pints were consumed last weekend when 60,000 fans celebrated their 1-0 win over Ecuador.

German breweries are ramping up production to meet the unexpectedly high quantities of beer required, and will hopefully thus avoid causing riots--or worse, resorting to wine, which does not allow for nearly such satisfying belching.
