Following a traditional night of sitting beside his fireplace reading fiction with a lukewarm cup of cocoa, Steve Irwin retired to bed, drifted into a peaceful slumber, and never awoke. Authorities discovered the "freak accident" death of TV's famous "Crocodile Hunter" the following day.

The community is now mourning this unforseen circumstance. Many thought that Irwin's history of provoking, coralling and manhandling dangerous creatures might lead to his ultimate demise. This unanticipated "freak accident" has proven otherwise.

Canadian University Distances Itself From Ivy League "IQitude"

Emblazoned with a picture of George W. Bush (who graduated from Yale in 1968), Lakehead University in northern Ontario has set up a web site which states, "Graduating from an Ivy League university doesn't necessarily mean you're smart." as part of their new recruitment campaign.

I can appreciate what they're trying to do, but I don't think college students these days go to universities to "get smart." (On the other hand, if you're a dumbass and you think going to college will make you the most powerful man in the country, that could be quite a draw) Maybe it is more effective and less humorous in Canada? By the way, I just made up "IQitude"... Stephen Colbert eat your heart out!

The Department of Homeland Security is building a massive database of critical national infrastructure to be used to determine what sites most need protection from terrorist attacks.

Among the critical assets in the database are Old MacDonald's Petting Zoo, a Kangaroo Conservation Center, Jay's Sporting Goods, several Wal-Mart stores, Amish Country Popcorn, and the Sweetwater Flea Market.

Battle Rages Between Spammers and Anti-Spammers

An Israeli company called Blue Security has attracted the ire of the spam community by introducing a new system whereby people subscribe to a "do not spam" registry and download client software that effectively attacks spam advertisers if they violate the do-not-spam rules.

The spamming community has not been happy with this and have launched their own counter attack against Blue Security (and anybody in between).

In the process, these two warring factions have interrupted thousands of internet sites and systems. And still, the federal authorities seem completely uninterested in actually enforcing computer tampering and anti-spamming laws.

First Star Trek, and now this?? NBC has taken "Celebrity Cooking Showdown" off its primetime menu. The reality series was originally scheduled to run five consecutive nights beginning April 17, but the peacock shelved "Showdown" on Thursday with two servings still to go. The quick hook comes after three nights of abysmal ratings.

But wait, this was produced by Sean "Puffy" "Puff Daddy" "P-Diddy" Combs. How could it not be good?

Michael Brown, disgraced, incompetent former director of the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency, is negotiating a consulting contract with St. Bernard Parish, the area in New Orleans hardest-hit by Hurricane Katrina.

Katrina spawned floodwaters that inundated the low-lying community between New Orleans and the Gulf of Mexico for two weeks after its Aug. 29 landfall there. The storm claimed 129 lives and destroyed 26,000 homes in St. Bernard.

Parish leaders expressed confidence in Brown's ability to help them compete more effectively with large communities for federal funding and speed a recovery they say has been mired in bureaucratic red tape.

Rumor has it Brown's first job as consultant will be to tell St. Bernard residents which fast food places suck the least.

Army Corps of Engineers Charged With Improperly Fixing Levees

[Beating Dead Horses]

The Army Corps of Engineers seems likely to fulfill a promise by President Bush to rebuild New Orleans's toppled flood walls to their original, pre-Katrina height by June 1, but two teams of independent experts monitoring the $1.6 billion reconstruction project say large sections of the rebuilt levee system will be substantially weaker than before the hurricane hit.

These experts say the Corps, racing to rebuild 169 miles of levees destroyed or damaged by Katrina, is taking shortcuts to compress what is usually a years-long construction process into a few weeks. They say that weak, substandard materials are being used in some levee walls, citing lab tests as evidence. And they say the Corps is deferring repairs to flood walls that survived Katrina but suffered structural damage that could cause them to topple in a future storm.

In essence, the new levee system, supposedly brought up to "old specs" which were not even designed to handle a Katrina-type storm, won't be as strong as it used to be. New Orleans resisidents have been adamant about rebuilding the levees to category 5 protection. Uh Oh.

Years after the fact, an activist group has finally won the right to get records on Florida voting machines from the 2004 election. The results are surprising: Internal logs of at least 40 touch-screen voting machines reveal that votes were time and date-stamped as cast two weeks before the election, sometimes in the middle of the night!

White House Katrina Study Blames Government

The results are in, and after tons more money spent on another report to asses what went wrong with the Katrina disaster, the obvious answer appears again, that FEMA and the Dept. of Homeland Security screwed up. Even the administration's own report reveals it.

Major departments across the U.S. government must assume significantly greater responsibility in future catastrophes, because the flawed response to Hurricane Katrina demonstrated that the United States relies too much on insufficient and not always well-managed resources of the Department of Homeland Security, a White House study has concluded.

An Italian judge has ordered a priest to appear in court this month to prove that Jesus Christ existed.

The case against Father Enrico Righi has been brought in the town of Viterbo, north of Rome, by Luigi Cascioli, a retired agronomist who once studied for the priesthood but later became a militant atheist.

Signor Cascioli, author of a book called The Fable of Christ, began legal proceedings against Father Righi three years ago after the priest denounced Signor Cascioli in the parish newsletter for questioning Christ’s historical existence.

The New York Times calls it "a rich vein of city records." Akin to gold??

Others might find such a characterization offensive and inappropriate. Whatever you want to call it, the city of New York is making public a large array of transcriptions and recordings of the pandemonium during Sept. 11th, as if any of us need to be reminded that people suffered and died. So be prepared to have your senses bludgeoned with a blitz of suffering, all ultimately designed to distract and lure eyeballs to commercial sponsors.

Already in "heavy rotation" is the recording of a New Yorker trapped under a fire truck, calling 911 from a cell phone, saying he won't be able to breathe much longer. Thanks for sharing CNN. Thanks for exploiting the suffering of thousands.
