A woman is now dead after participating in California radio station, KDND-FM's contest, "Hold your wee for a wii". The contestants were challenged to drink as much water as they can without going to the bathroom. A 28-year old contestant ended up dying from acute water intoxication. |
A 28-year-old woman found dead hours after taking part in a radio station's water-drinking contest died of water intoxication, the coroner's office said Saturday.
Assistant Sacramento County Coroner Ed Smith said a preliminary investigation found evidence "consistent with a water intoxication death." Also known as hyponatremia, water intoxication occurs when the body's sodium level falls below normal. Overdrinking dilutes the sodium in the bloodstream, causing the brain to swell and push against the skull. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, weakness and, in severe cases, seizures, coma and death.
Jennifer Strange's mother found her daughter's body at her home Friday in the Sacramento suburb of Rancho Cordova after Strange called her supervisor at her job to say she was heading home in terrible pain.
"She said to one of our supervisors that she was on her way home and her head was hurting her real bad," said Laura Rios, one of Strange's co-workers at Radiological Associates of Sacramento. "She was crying and that was the last that anyone had heard from her."
Earlier Friday, Strange took part in a contest at radio station KDND-FM (107.9) in which participants competed to see how much water they could drink without going to the bathroom. |

? Posted by Fred on 2007-01-18 04:03:50 | I heard the play back of the disc jockey's reaction to the nurse calling in to warn them of this type of outcome resulting from drinking too much water. "They signed a waver so it's not our problem!" He should have his ass kicked publicly...... no, he should be forced to drink enough water to make him have the same fake. Sorry bastard! |
Honestly.. Posted by Cin on 2007-01-18 08:25:22 | This was very tragic. I feel horrible for the family. My condolences.
You would think that anyone holding a contest that would require someone to ingest anything would do more research as to the cause and effects of these stunts. I would think that those participating would also be a little more inclined to find out more before doing anything as well, especially for a game system? That's what our society has come down to? |
Her Fault, Not the Radio Station Posted by rob on 2007-01-18 09:46:27 | I disagree with those who hold the station and DJs responsible. It is the individual's responsibility to be aware of any potential harmful effects of ingesting anything. So I guess if the station's contest was to eat arsenic the individual should not be responsible? Anything taken in excess (even water) can be harmful, folks. Get real, and get responsible for your own actions. |
The wages of sin is death... Posted by Anonymous on 2007-01-18 11:41:33 | Greed killed her.
BUT - I still feel for her, and her family. People who are not living for God are blind to so much... |
Honestly.. Posted by Cin on 2007-01-18 13:17:20 | Thank you Rob.. You said it not me! LOL I feel the same. |
Stupidity Everywhere Posted by Mr. Wow on 2007-01-19 08:22:41 | I think the radio station takes some blame because they created the contest and encouraged an action which they knew was "less than safe." Philosophically, they got people to walk amoung poisonous snakes, play with "real guns," etc... |
oh well! Posted by me on 2007-01-19 20:27:28 | life goes on some people have to learn the hard way! |

Posted by Anonymous on 2009-11-23 05:17:45 | Acute Water Intoxication....broken down so everyone will understand what it is.
You need to keep your body balanced in terms of salt and water, unless you want certain things to happen. Acute Water Intoxication can always be called Hypertonicity. Basically, you have too little salt in your body which means too much water. This causes the cells in your body to expand and pop. That is what happened to this woman, she died because too many cells swelled and popped. |
