Congressman Tom Reynolds' (R-NY) chief of staff, Kirk Fordham, tried to broker a secret deal last Friday to get ABC News to cover up the worst part of the Foley child predator scandal, the lurid five-plus-page instant message chat in which Foley asked a child to measure his penis and then led the child into a detailed discussion of masturbatory techniques.

The scandal, now dubbed "Masturgate" is spreading across the net like fire, even though the mainstream media continues to turn a hairy palm and blind eye to the details that high ranking officials knew about the congressman's activities and tried to cover it up for more than FIVE YEARS!

And what's Foley done in the wake of the scandal? The standard celebrity & conservative escape hatch made famous by everyone from Rush Limbaugh to Mel Gibson: blame it on alcohol and check yourself into rehab.

But wait, we have more, oh so much more, including double video goodness.

Is the GOP the party of corruption? Check out this juicy MSNBC confrontation.

To clarify, these were the most graphic IMs (well, of those that have been published). Reynolds' Chief of Staff tried to get ABC News to pull the plug on that part of the story in exchange for giving them the "exclusive" that Foley was about to resign. ABC's Brian Ross said no deal.

Reynolds is the chair of the NRCC, and one of the people who confirmed that he knew about the Foley problem last year -- and confirmed he told Hastert. Now his Chief of Staff is confirmed to have tried to pull the story about the IM's.

Fordham was previously only reported -- and not by name -- as being "Foley's former Chief of Staff", which led to some confusion. His current position is working for NRCC chair Tom Reynolds, one of the GOP leaders who knew of the reports against Foley.

ALSO, this may not be the end of the scandal:

BRIAN ROSS: So far, Foley is the only member whose overt sexual approaches have been documented. Charlie?

CHARLES GIBSON: The only one to be documented, but are there other shoes to drop?

ROSS: We’re hearing quite a bit from former pages. They’re sending us all sorts of messages about possible other members.

Oh wait, it gets even better... here's a dose of delicious irony:

The congressman did protest too much, methinks

Ooh, that last one is GOOD! Let's see, there's this guy, the crusader for exploited children, hitting on same-sex minors. There was James West, the Republican mayor of Spokane, WA, who was devoted to trashing anything resembling gay rights...and was also revealed to be making dates with gay teens via e-mail. Then there was Virginia Representative Edward Schrock, a staunch Republican backed by the Christian Coalition and an avid promoter of a Constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, who left a message on a gay phone dating service looking for a partner to "get together with a guy from time to time just to -- just to play... get naked, play, and see what happens."

Wow, could these guys be, I dunno, overcompensating for something? Think about that the next time a politician seems a little bit too interested in what grown, consenting adults are doing in their bedrooms.

And here's one more tidbit of Foley irony for you:

"It's vile. It's more sad than anything else, to see someone with such potential throw it all down the drain because of a sexual addiction." -- Mark Foley, R-West Palm Beach, September 12, 1998, referring to Bill Clinton in the St. Petersburg Times.
