The Discovery TV show Man vs Wild shows a charismatic ex-British Special Forces soldier, Bear Grylls, as the ultimate survivalist, braving everything from volcanic lava to river rapids using his wits and a few basic items. Or perhaps not?

The BBC is investigating claims that Man vs Wild "misled viewers." And Bear Grylls (former member of SAS, a career that ended when he broke his back in three places; after rehabilitation, became the youngest Brit to climb Mt. Everest and return alive) isn’t as rugged as he seems on the show. Not that we all didn’t think some of Man vs Wild was staged for dramatic effect, but there are some significant allegations of deception.

American survival consultant Mark Weinert, who was recruited by Diverse Productions, told the paper that Grylls claimed to be stranded on a desert island on one occasion. However, he was actually in Hawaii, and spent some of his time there in a motel, Mr Weinert alleged. Another time, he added, Grylls was filmed building a raft by himself, whereas the crew had actually put it together and dismantled it beforehand, to ensure that it worked. And in a further episode, supposedly "wild" horses rounded up by Grylls had come from a local trekking facility, he claimed.

The Discovery Channel made a statement saying, "The program explicitly does not claim that presenter Bear Grylls’ experience is one of unaided solo survival. For example, he often directly addresses the production team, including the cameraman, making it clear he is receiving an element of back-up."

Stranded miles away from help, can he survive??

I'm sure nobody will mind that Bear slipped on a life jacket when the camera was turned off..

Man vs Wild's "deserted island" is actually a major tourist destination:

More evidence of hanky panky here.

Did this guy actually slaughter a pig on the show Man vs Wild???? I know that sadly millions of pigs are slaughtered daily in the slaughter houses but I never expected it to be done on one of the very few television stations worth watching, the Discovery channel. You don't seem to care how it will effect all of people who do consider life worth saving, your theory must be "anything goes if we can make a buck". Shame on you. No more Discovery channel for me.
