Government Lets Things Get Weird

[Sex]
Deciding that, as a demographic, unmarried 19- to 29-year-olds are having way too much sex, the federal government is now including them in the scope of its abstinence-only educational programs. These programs give no instruction on birth control or safe sex, and this latest twist is apparently an effort to reduce the number of pregnancies to unmarried women between the ages of 19-29 (the age group with the largest number of out-of-wedlock births--hey, could that be a factor of couples deciding to pass on formalizing their relationships, rather than wild sex?). The government's position is that this is merely a clarification of who may be targeted with these programs. Studies show that 90% (that's NINETY PERCENT) of people in that age group have had sexual intercourse. The other 10% of course consists of pious young unmarried conservatives and younger priests. Or just the conservatives. Actually, who the hell is in that 10%?

The president of Advocates for Youth, James Wagoner, says that "to be preaching abstinence when 90% of people are having sex is in essence to lose touch with reality. It's an ideological campaign. It has nothing to do with public health." I'm trying to not be too partisan, I just want to point out some serious hypocritical BS-- from the RNC's Republican Oath:
  • I BELIEVE the strength of our nation lies with the individual and that each person’s dignity, freedom, ability and responsibility must be honored.

AND
  • I BELIEVE the proper role of government is to provide for the people only those critical functions that cannot be performed by individuals or private organizations and that the best government is that which governs least.

UNLESS, of course, you're using that freedom to visit the Netherlands, if you catch my drift. Then the aforementioned least-governing government has a solemn duty to step it up a notch and urge you (preferably at a bar on a Friday) to take matters into your own hands (wink wink, nudge nudge).
