After the September 11 terrorist attacks, Gary Weddle followed the news so closely he forgot to shave. After a week he decided not to shave until Osama bin Laden was caught or killed.
Nor has Weddle, 46, who expected the al Qaeda leader to be caught within a month or so, trimmed his facial hair in the succeeding five years as he went from substitute teacher to science instructor at Ephrata Middle School.
At the start of each school year he gives students a brief explanation of his goofy beard and a lesson in irony, futility and politics. |
| "I still get emotional over the families who lost loved ones. I just don't feel there's any closure on this until they get that guy,"
His wife, Donita, hates the beard, but their three daughters, who attend high school don't mind and "mostly their boyfriends think it's cool," Weddle said.
He said he would keep the beard, untrimmed, as long as bin Laden remains at large -- "even if I get buried with it." | Details | |

Missed the memo Posted by Pile on 2006-09-14 23:12:43 | Personally, this guy obviously didn't get the memo. You fight terrorism by putting a SUPPORT OUR TROOPS ribbon on your car. |

This Man Posted by 6th period of his 2006/ 2007 year on 2007-06-11 23:37:00 | I know this man. He is actually my 8th grade science teacher. He was also my 7th grade science teacher for a while. He always is telling us very interesting thigs about 9/11 that we never really thought about. He gives us a new vision of what happend that day and what kinds of things that those people went through and what some of them did just to live for a moment longer. He is a wonderful man and a terrific teacher and I think that him doing this is showing what he believes in and what we all should take more consideration in. |
