Windows Vista Slows Down When You Play Music Posted by Pile (13642 views) [E-Mail link] It's no secret many users have complained that Vista is slower than XP but now users are reporting an unusual "feature" of Microsoft's new Vista version of Windows: apparently when you play music on your computer, your Internet/network performance is severely degraded! Whenever any audio is being sent to a sound card even when paused, network performance is instantly reduced. As soon as the audio is stopped, the throughput begins to climb to its expected speed. Many users are confused as to what's going on with Vista and this odd behavior. One thing's for sure... playing music and surfing the net just got a little more difficult under Vista. One user on Slashdot suggested, My guess is that Vista is intensively scanning the sound hardware to ensure that all the voltages and other parameters remain in compliance -- and hiding this fact from the user. It's well known that part of the Vista DRM infection is that it checks to ensure that the Secure Audio Path remain intact, and that part of this is that it tries very hard to detect any "illegal" modifications or equipment. I think this could indeed be another scheme coming out of M$ to make sure that people are not using non-DRM or illegal files on their systems. Untill M$ stops supporting XP I will not upgrade to it, in which case they will force me too.
