[Television]
During Fox News' coverage of the July 7 London bombings, Washington managing editor Brit Hume commented, I mean, my first thought when I heard -- just on a personal basis, when I heard there had been this attack and I saw the futures this morning, which were really in the tank, I thought, "Hmmm, time to buy."

This is in stark contrast to CNN Host Anderson Cooper, who, during a remote broadcast in the middle of the worst part of Hurricane Dennis, said to a fellow commentator, "This might be vain, but you've got a leaf in your hair."

In response to the seemingly never-ending diatribes on the part of republicans over "supporting our troops" and the merciless criticisms they levy against "filthy liberals" who they claim are "against the war" Operation Yellow Elephant has been launched.

Opponents of the war are basically sick and tired of the hypocrisy of the right wingers and are now demanding that they sign up and truly support the troops, or shut their trap.

[Science]
The American Civil Liberties Union has released a detailed report stating that, "academic freedom and scientific inquiry have come under sustained assault since September 11, 2001. Spurred by misguided and often disingenuous security concerns, the Bush Administration has sought to impose growing restrictions on the free flow of scientific information, unreasonable barriers to the use of scientific materials, and increased monitoring of and restrictions on foreign university students."

Apparently this whole science thing is overrated, but I say, we obviously need science. Without science, wouldn't episodes of CSI be lame?

By now, everyone's heard about the UK press publishing pictures of Saddam Hussein in prison in his underwear. The American media is buzzing about this being a horendous act, a violation of the Geneva Convention, and inappropriate... at the same time the American press, being the whores that they are, have re-printed the Saddam-underwear picture themselves. Yes, almost every major news organization has published the picture. I guess all you need is one company to start it, then everybody can do it and it's not the same?

Ben Cohen, one of the founders of Ben & Jerry's ice cream empire, has produced a provacative short outlining the size of America's nuclear stockpile (which is frighteningly excessive - far beyond what is necessary for either defense, or to destroy every other country on the planet). And the sad part is how many things could be improved if just some of the ongoing taxpayer money that is required to maintain this huge stockpile was put to other uses. Check this link out - it's information you need to know.

After seeing a boy carrying something long and wrapped into Marshall Junior High, authorities lept into action.

The drama ended two hours later when the suspicious item was identified as a 30-inch burrito filled with steak, guacamole, lettuce, salsa and jalapenos and wrapped inside tin foil and a white T-shirt.

The NRA has pushed through some new legislation in the state of Florida that's likely to get a lot of insecure, middle-aged white men almost as excited as when they discovered Viagra: Manslaughter with a gun is now legal in Florida! Yes, the new "Meet Force With Force" law, signed by good 'ol boy Jeb Bush, has done away with that wimpy idea that you can't shoot someone dead in a conflict if running away was an option.

The NRA plans to sweep similar laws throughout the South and eventually the entire country.

What's scary is that there's evidence to indicate that Guckert/Gannon checked in to the White House on a schedule that conflicts with his purpose there. So who in the white house was this gay prostitute serving?

Slate has a very scary article on how the Bush administration is pushing the boundaries of what previously public information should now be classified as secret and made unavailable to most people, citing terrorist concerns. What information may no longer be public? How about how taxpayer money is spent and Federal budgets, maps, old science archives that have been public for more than 50 years, government telephone directories, and much more. This plays right into the plan of the current administration to hide as much information on what the government is doing as it possibly can.

Bad translation of Bin Laden tape = trouble for "red" states

[News Media]
The Middle East Media Research Insitute has evidence to indicate that the U.S. media mis-translated the Osama Bin Laden tape of Oct. 29th. Among other things, a key aspect of the speech was mischaracterized, where Bin Laden stated that the security each individual U.S. state would be based on how they voted in the election. If this is true, then he's signalled his intent to go after "red states" and ignore California, New York and other urban areas whose electoral votes didn't go for Bush.

A leaked draft public relations plan for the Department of Homeland Security's Customs and Border Protection bureau suggested "repeating the message, in the weeks leading up to the presidential election, that America is safer," reports the Washington Post. The plan's objective is "to change perception through continuous, consistent and highly credible information." It suggests using "surrogates" to spread messages, and adopting a "theme of the month": "Border Patrol" in October, "Agriculture" in November, and "Trade" in December. The PR plan also proposed pitching stories to the Washington Times editorial board and "morning shows," with an exclusive "FOX 3-4 part series ... Geraldo or as backup Dr. Bob Arnot with MSNBC."

If America were Iraq, What would it be Like?

What would America look like if it were in Iraq's current situation?

The population of the US is over 11 times that of Iraq, so a lot of statistics would have to be multiplied by that number.

Thus, violence killed 300 Iraqis last week, the equivalent proportionately of 3,300 Americans. What if 3,300 Americans had died in car bombings, grenade and rocket attacks, machine gun spray, and aerial bombardment in the last week?

That is a number greater than the deaths on September 11, and if America were Iraq, it would be an ongoing, weekly or monthly toll.

Juan Cole, a Professor of History at the University of Michigan takes a fascinating look what the US would be like it were Iraq
