More than a fifth of the approximately 385 prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, have been cleared for release but may have to wait months or years for their freedom because U.S. officials are finding it increasingly difficult to line up places to send them, according to Bush administration officials and defense lawyers.

The Army Corps of Engineers, the Keystone Cops of public civil engineering projects, continues its streak of crackerjack work. The Corps was shopping for bids for some new pumps for New Orleans' beleaguered canal system, so they needed to write up specifications for the pumps they were looking for. But that's a lot of work, what with the typing and drafts and spell-checking and all--so instead they decided to just cut and paste the text straight out of an existing catalog. You'll never guess whose catalog it was.

U.S. officials who say there has been a dramatic drop in sectarian violence in Iraq since President Bush began sending more American troops into Baghdad aren't counting one of the main killers of Iraqi civilians: Car bombs.

In exploring reasons why the "War in Iraq" isn't going so well, some liberals say it's because Americans have not been asked to make sacrifices for the war. Bill Maher, in his "New Rules" segment on HBO's Real Time, has a different take.

"This is not right," said Master Sgt. Ronald Jenkins, who has been ordered to Iraq even though he has a spine problem that doctors say would be damaged further by heavy Army protective gear. "This whole thing is about taking care of soldiers," he said angrily. "If you are fit to fight you are fit to fight. If you are not fit to fight, then you are not fit to fight."

As the military scrambles to pour more soldiers into Iraq, a unit of the Army's 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Benning, Ga., is deploying troops with serious injuries and other medical problems, including GIs who doctors have said are medically unfit for battle. Some are too injured to wear their body armor, according to medical records.

On a one-day unannounced trip to Baghdad (worst. vacation. ever.) over the weekend, Condoleezza Rice (bane of spellcheckers in any language) said she saw "new hope" in Iraq after the launch of a US-led security plan. No one told the bad guys, however, as on Sunday a marketplace bombing killed 60 people just minutes after a US sweep of the area. So Iraqis, if I were you, I'd do my hoping under my bed. In a bunker. Far away from Iraq.

As he campaigns for the Republican presidential nomination, Rudolph Giuliani will have to contend with political and personal baggage unknown to prospective supporters whose knowledge of the former New York mayor is limited to his post-September 11 exploits. So, in a bid to educate the electorate, The Smoking Gun is offering excerpts from a remarkable "vulnerability study" that was commissioned by Giuliani's campaign prior to his successful 1993 City Hall run.

From marrying his second cousin to dodging the draft, Republican Rudy Guiliani has some controversial qualifications for the highest office in the land.

In a statement devoid of irony, President Bush warned Iran that the U.S. would respond firmly if Iran brought a military presence into Iraq and threatened Iraqi citizens. Following a day in which over a hundred Iraqi citizens were killed, including 5 schoolgirls hit by mortar fire, one wonders how much more threatened they can get.

The Bush administration has condemned a recent missile test conducted by China in which one of that country's older weather satellites was blown into as many as 300,000 pieces (technically known as "smithereens"). The reason for the criticism should be obvious to anyone- it might impede our ability to spy with impunity!

Cody Baker might have become Sgt. Finest Freshest Fastest or Sgt. Mr. Clean although the winning bidder at the time the auction ended was FreebieStore.com with a bid of 30,000.01. President George W. "I Am the Decider!" Bush is delaying until some time in January his planned report to the nation on the direction he and aides are charting for the United States in Iraq. Meanwhile the American soldier death toll in Iraq is nearing 3000, tens of thousands of Americans injured, and reports of upwards of 500,000 dead Iraqis. A Navy drill off the coast of Hawaii to demonstrate the U.S.'s ability to destroy two incoming missiles at once from the same ship failed. This second test failure was due to a computer configuration error (Navy techs had inadvertantly installed spyware while surfing www.naughtymidshipman.com) and caused the first interceptor missile of two to misfire and the test to terminate. So on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor, we find ourselves once again unable to defend that port.

In a press conference that was interrupted by a power outage in Baghdad yesterday, the top U.S. Commander in Iraq, Gen. George "George" Casey, and Ambassador Khalilzad set forth a bold plan for coming up with a bold plan maybe by the end of the year. In addition, the Iraqi forces might take complete control of all of Iraq in 12-18 months with some level of support from U.S. forces. So they will run everything except for the stuff that we still run--got that?

Santorum Compares Iraq to Minas Tirith

In a recent interview, U.S. Senator and enricher of slang dictionaries everywhere Rick Santorum compared Iraq's role in the world terror situation to a subtle relationship in J.R.R. Tolkein's epic fantasy saga of good battling evil, The Lord of the Rings.

"As the hobbits are going up Mount Doom, the Eye of Mordor is being drawn somewhere else," Santorum said, describing the tool the evil Lord Sauron used in search of the magical ring that would consolidate his power over Middle-earth.

"It's being drawn to Iraq and it's not being drawn to the U.S.," Santorum continued. "You know what? I want to keep it on Iraq. I don't want the Eye to come back here to the United States."

Santorum failed to mention the huge battle that resulted when the Eye of Sauron was drawn to Minas Tirith, the near-destruction of that city, or the thousands of deaths that resulted. Nonetheless, we'd get behind any plan he might have to send President Bush off to Mordor to retrieve his Precioussssss oil. And who's Frodo in this analogy? Whitney Houston, the Dark Queen who destroys the power of the evil Sauron-bin-Laden?
