The Australian military, faced with flagging recruitment numbers (seems like that's going around), is offering those students who take a year off after finishing school to go backpacking or work on aid projects (about 34,000 people a year) a chance to "try before you buy" military service.

Under the plan announced by the Ministry of Defence, those leaving school would have the chance to enlist for only one year to see if they liked military service before either entering the private sector or joining up for the rest of their full four year commitment. The effort is to get people into the military who would otherwise be scared away by the "eternity" of four years of service. Critics argue that the move is the first step towards conscription.
