Matt Damon has a rather insightful analysis of the selection of unknown Alaskan governor Sara Palin as McCain's running mate. He compares it to a quirky Disney movie where a naive hockey-mom accidentally becomes the President of the United States.... check out the video...

The other day I was looking in a local Arkansas Paper and came across a rather interesting amendment being proposed... along with some politically-correct term limits, the amendment also explicitly gives "idiots" and "insane persons" the right to vote, which apparently was not previously available. I didn't know idiots had their own lobbying group... oh, wait...

There's been some controversy surrounding Chinese gymnast, He Kexin (何可欣), who won the individual gold medal in parallel bars and came in second in all-around gynmastics.

Olympics rules state that you must be 16 years old to compete. This Chinese girl looks much younger than she claims (to be born on Jan 1 1992 - the earliest possible date to be eligible to compete).

A little sleuthing online by various net-detectives has uncovered evidence to the contrary.

We've all heard it before. A politician leaves office with the announcement that they want to spend more time with the family.

In the case of Missouri Republican Scott Muschany, this apparently means so he can rape his mistresses' 14-year old daughter. Go GOP! You guys never cease to amaze the rest of us with your feats of sexual deviancy!

"I want to thank you for the support which you have given to my efforts to hold this administration accountable for taking us into a war based on lies, and for the destruction of the rule of law and the destruction of cherished Constitutional principles," Kucinich said.

He will make the case, he continued, that the President has violated his oath of office, violated U.S. and international law, has separated our nation from our Constitution, and has threatened the democratic core of our nation.

I got good news and bad news. The good news is Tony Snow won't be spreading any more lies and misinformation as has been his career for the last decade. The bad news is it's not because he's found some integrity. It's because he's dead.

The NYT says, "Tony Snow, a conservative writer and commentator who cheerfully sparred with reporters in the White House briefing room during a stint as President Bush's press secretary, died Saturday of colon cancer. He was 53."

I remember when he first took the job he claimed that his credibility shouldn't be questioned because he took a pay cut to be White House Press Secretary.

Then when he left office, he cited as the reason for leaving, he wasn't making enough money to be able to afford the lifestyle to which he was accustomed.

Bush Changes Thomas Jefferson's Speech At July 4 Celebration

[So-They-Say]

President Bush was at Monticello for a 4th of July celebration and he delivered an address. But it's quite telling that his speechwriters, in quoting Jefferson, cut out an anti-religious statement from a long and famous quote. Here's the way Bush put it:

Thomas Jefferson understood that these rights do not belong to Americans alone. They belong to all mankind. And he looked to the day when all people could secure them. On the 50th anniversary of America's independence, Thomas Jefferson passed away. But before leaving this world, he explained that the principles of the Declaration of Independence were universal. In one of the final letters of his life, he wrote, "May it be to the world, what I believe it will be -- to some parts sooner, to others later, but finally to all -- the Signal of arousing men to burst the chains, and to assume the blessings and security of self-government."

Now let's look at the full quote, including the part that was cut out...

A group of so-called "rabble rousers" have placed an ad in today's New York Times... it's well worth a read...

“We the people of the United States,” the first words of the Constitution, make it clear that our government was established to serve the people. Our Constitution contains checks and balances to prevent abuses of power, and our Bill of Rights limits government in order to guarantee fundamental rights and liberties. Today the "War on Terror" undermines those crucial limits on power that our Constitution promises. Congress's complicity in this war has enabled constitutional violations of including warrantless surveillance, torture, indefinite detention, and preemptive war.

Fighting against one violation at a time fragments our movement. It is time to unite to face the common source of these problems.

Want to know if waterboarding is torture? Ask Christopher Hitchens. Previously, this outspoken writer and atheist has taken the atypical view among his contemporaries that the war against those in the middle east was not necessarily a bad thing, and that water boarding was not torture.

That is... until he took the challenge to experience it first hand...

Before You Enlist! provides a rational voice to counter the seductive and often deceptive recruiting practices of the U.S. military. The message is not "don't enlist" but rather to provide young people and their families a more complete picture of the life-altering consequences of joining the military especially in wartime.
