Actor Richard Gere is being beaten and burned in effigy by various protesting groups in India after his behavior at an HIV/AIDS-awareness event in New Delhi (Same as the Old Delhi). What could Mr. Gere have done to deserve such treatment? The answer will SHOCK you--if you're a conservative Indian Hindu.

He hugged and kissed famous Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, who you'll undoubtedly remember from 2006's Shaadi Karke Phas Gaya Yaar, at the aforementioned event. Members of the right-wing Hindu nationalist group Shiv Sena beat the burning Gere effigies in Mumbai. Other protests sprang up around the country including at Varanasi, Hindu's holiest city. There crowds chanted, "Down with Shilpa Shetty!" Public displays of affection and sex are very taboo in India, and the embracing and kissing of Shetty by Gere means he probably shouldn't look for any vacation properties on the subcontinent.
