The Department of Homeland Stupidity

The Department of Homeland Security, the new government meta-agency tasked with keeping our entire country safe from terrorist attacks both foreign and domestic, has come up with one humdinger of an idea. Having apparently run out of ideas on how to predict the next terrorist attack, they are turning to a group of people who are experts at making stuff up. When you're the government agency looking for some ideas about the future of terror, who do you turn to? Science fiction writers, of course.

A group of five authors of contemporary science fiction, formed by author Arlan Andrews and operating under the super-spiffy name of "Sigma," have been brought in by the DHS to discuss potential future terror attacks and our government's response to them. "Fifty years ago, science-fiction writers told us about flying cars and a wireless handheld communicator," says the spokesman for Homeland Security's Science and Technology division, Christopher Kelly. "Although flying cars haven't evolved, cellphones today are a way of life. We need to look everywhere for ideas, and science-fiction writers clearly inform the debate." There you go--science fiction writers have a prediction success rate of 50% which is way, WAY better than the government has achieved thus far; no wonder they're being brought in. It's too bad Dr. Seuss is dead--he could tell the feds to keep the terrorists off our land, because it's getting out of hand.
