Thieves who made off with more than $1.7 million in nuts were apprehended recently when a suspicious ware house owner noticed large numbers of squirrels lurking outside one of his rented spaces.

Okay, really he noticed the perpetrators repackaging nuts for shipment, but you have to think that the squirrels were probably onto them long before that.

FBI agents have arrested a man accused of sending over a dozen envelopes filled with white powder and threatening letters to public figures including MSNBC anchor Keith Olbermann, David Letterman, Jon Stewart, Speaker-in-Waiting Nancy Pelosi, and Democratic Senator Charles Schumer.

Shockingly, the suspect is a 39-year-old white man who lives with his parents, spends a lot of time on the right-wing site Free Republic, and thinks Ann Coulter is a "goddess." FBI agents trailed him to a mailbox and watched him post a powder-filled envelope, catching him in the act and charging him with the felony of sending threats by U.S. Mail.

Olbermann commented on the arrest, of course, and we have the video....

Two years after the controversy-plagued 2004 elections, four years after HAVA (the Help America Vote Act) was passed, and six years after the Supreme Court and America romanced the hanging chad, experts are bracing for yet another wave of challenges to regional vote-counting systems.

One-third of us will use voting machines that have never before served in a general election. Legal challenges to paperless DRE (direct-recording electronic) voting technologies are proliferating across the country, and as computer scientists demonstrated earlier this year, hacking challenges to many of these machines can bear fruit even faster than demands for recounts.

Computerworld has put together a comprehensive guide to voting equipment, laws and online resources on a state-by-state basis. See how your state stands in the big picture. Are you protected from fraud? Does your state require a paper trail of voting? You'd be surprised how many states don't seem to care about this democracy-thing.

The Australian military, faced with flagging recruitment numbers (seems like that's going around), is offering those students who take a year off after finishing school to go backpacking or work on aid projects (about 34,000 people a year) a chance to "try before you buy" military service.

A man who worked for the CIA and is now being held by the U.S. on immigration charges is known to have planned the bombing of a Cubana (Cuban airline) flight that killed all 73 passengers. Despite this, Luis Posada Carriles will not be classified by our government as a terrorist and deported to Cuba. Bush has said, "We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them." So what does that say about us?

Iran is going to open up its nuclear facilities to "foreign tourists" due to an order issued by Pres. Ahmadinejad. The law is an effort to prove that the facilities are aimed at generating fuel and not weapons. This is probably a trip you won't get through Orbitz.

In the wake of concern by the public over the constitutionality of wiretapping efforts, a small herd of congresscritters, led by Republican senator Arlen Specter, have produced what appears to be a bill requiring judicial review of the wiretapping process. Sound good so far? Until you start reading the bill, and as usual, while it appears to leave one with the impression that the civil liberties of Americans are important and should be protected, actually strips even more rights away from the populace, and seeks to legitimize a means by which Americans can be monitored by the government without permission, review or checks and balances. Good thing our news media is letting people know about this..

The target of the hacker, the National Nuclear Safety Administration, is the latest agency to reveal that sensitive private information about government workers was stolen.

The incident happened last September but top Energy Department officials were not told about it until this week, prompting the chairman of the House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee to demand the resignation of the head of the NNSA.

Frustrated with the performance of the American Red Cross, Alabama's Gov. Bob Riley has asked Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff for the federal aid necessary to let the state assume primary responsibility for operating its own emergency shelters in disasters. The move comes after months of criticism of the Red Cross, inspired by what even the organization's own leaders acknowledge was its inadequate response to Hurricane Katrina.

Now there's donation money well spent!

A New Orleans house flattened but for a concrete staircase on a crumbling facade was among many storm-ravaged structures that federal officials deemed fit for occupancy by Katrina victims now living in Houston, Mayor Bill White said Friday.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has notified about 8,900 heads of households in Houston, representing more than 20,000 Katrina evacuees, that they will be ineligible for the cash assistance intended to replace a massive city voucher program that has paid their rent.

A common reason was that the evacuees' former homes were now habitable.

Jerry Taylor is the manager for the city of Tuttle, Oklahoma, whose motto is "Where people grow.. Friendly!"

Despite Taylor's claim of having "22 years in computer systems and engineering", he arrived at his web site only to find the Apache installation splash page and started calling the company names listed, accusing them of hacking the city's web site and threatening to report the issue to the FBI, despite being told that the problem was not what he thought. As was obvious, a minor glitch with a web server configuration exposed this Okie's finely-tuned ability to grossly overreact.
