Election's Over--Gas Prices Rise Again

[Essential Factoids]
It seems that BSalert wasn't the only one who noticed that the president's approval rating rises when gas prices fall. Starting in August...about the time the Republicans began to get an inkling that they might not be greeted with chocolates and flowers at the polls this time...gas prices had conveniently been dropping to less insane levels. This gave the Democrats one less sore spot to poke in voters who needed a little reminder why they didn't like the status quo. But even cheap(er) gas wasn't enough to buy off the voters this time. And now that the election's over, have you noticed any changes at the pump?

The collection of artifacts was so valuable, so precious, that the insurance company insisted that the premises be patrolled by a trained guard dog at night to prevent theft. Little did they expect the terrible carnage that was to follow....

Barney, a doberman pinscher with six years of blameless service, flew into an unexplained fit of rage and attacked the very objects he had been hired to protect: a collection of rare teddy bears, most on loan from private collectors, on display at a tourist attraction called Wookey Hall Caves in Somerset, England.

  • In a speech given in Washington, D.C., President Bush said about democracy, "One of the great things about America, one of the beauties of our country, is that when we see a young, innocent child blown up by an IED, we cry." Apparently, in monarchies, dead children are met with laughter and merrymaking.

Since maybe some of you don't have the patience for a three-hour telecast, here are my reflections on the event.

First, the monologue. Generally, it was funny. Politically speaking, it was reasonably balanced. During his monologue, Chris Rock did a good ten-minute riff on Bush. ("Just imagine if you work at the Gap…and when you close up for the day, your register is $75 trillion dollars short.") The audience seemed to love it (surprised?). He did a very mild jab at Michael Moore, but only after saying nice things about his movie.

He also said some nice things about the film "The Passion of the Christ," and Jesus in general, to provide balance. And on a more personal level, if he ever zinged anybody, like Cuba Gooding, he managed to turn it around on himself before he was done.

In what appears to be a mind-numbing wheelbarrow of irony, the web site Smoking Gun says, "Anybody who has read many official documents—including those making headlines in the last year or more—has seen plenty of redactions (those portions that are blacked out or otherwise made unreadable). This, we're told, is for legitimate reasons, such as "national security" or "protecting intelligence sources and methods." But now we have absolute, incontrovertible proof that the government also censors completely innocuous material simply because they don't like it."
