After the September 11 terrorist attacks, Gary Weddle followed the news so closely he forgot to shave. After a week he decided not to shave until Osama bin Laden was caught or killed.

Nor has Weddle, 46, who expected the al Qaeda leader to be caught within a month or so, trimmed his facial hair in the succeeding five years as he went from substitute teacher to science instructor at Ephrata Middle School.

At the start of each school year he gives students a brief explanation of his goofy beard and a lesson in irony, futility and politics.

Invasion of Iraq Has Now Claimed More Lives Than 9/11

While President Bush can't seem to make up his mind how to spin the Iraq invasion in the face of the 9/11 attacks, one thing seems ominously poignant: More Americans have now died in Iraq than died on 9/11. R.J. Eskow writes, "Iraq didn't attack us on that day, and our misguided policy there has now taken more American lives than Al Qaeda.

Here are the numbers: 3,015 Americans have died in Iraq as of September 9. 2,666 of these were military deaths and 349 were civilians. Who knows how many innocent Iraqis have been killed. The government doesn't seem to care enough to keep accurate numbers."

Congress Raises Minimum Age of Soldiers to 42

How to address the growing problem: not enough people are signing up for the armed forces to keep waging this war in Iraq. Bonuses don't seem to be helping, and they've turned to keeping soldiers for extra tours of duty because they can't replace them. (Be All that You Can Be...for two or three times as long as you signed up for.)

But now Congress has solved the problem! Yes, it's raised the maximum age to serve in the U.S. Army yet again, this time to 42. For the first time, we can actually have a multi-generational army! Think of the morale boost of fathers and sons serving side-by-side on the battlefield! (And let's not forget those moms...the age raise applies to women soldiers, too! That's one way to avoid future Cindy Sheehans.)

The US military investigated building a "gay bomb", which would make enemy soldiers "sexually irresistible" to each other, government papers say.

Other weapons that never saw the light of day include one to make soldiers obvious by their bad breath.

The US defense department considered various non-lethal chemicals meant to disrupt enemy discipline and morale.

The 1994 plans were for a six-year project costing $7.5m, but they were never pursued.

Let's say that you're one of the brave soldiers who have served your country honorably, earning yourself the right to a few veteran's benefits for your service. What's one way your Veteran's Administration can thank you?

Why, lose the personal information of as many as 26.5 million of you, of course. Names, birth dates, social security numbers...exactly what you'd need to steal the identity of a hardworking veteran with decent credit. Hey, who wants to open a credit card on Private Johnson's account?

United Airlines has begun showing an in-flight video about military glamor jobs that was produced and funded by the Department of Defense--a fact passengers do not learn from watching it.

Sandwiched between NBC sitcoms and Discovery Channel previews, "Today's Military," as the 13-minute program is called, highlights five jobs that few members of the armed forces could point to as their own.

It shows only one soldier beyond U.S. borders, who's "doing humanitarian work in Thailand" -- a remarkable focus at a time of war. The Defense Department paid United $36,000 to run the video for one month.

Troop-Supporting Steakhouse Losing Its Lease

For all of the empty words and useless posturing that most people mean when they say they "support the troops," Fran O'Brien's Stadium Steakhouse in DC, located in the basement of the Capital Hilton, gives free weekly steak dinners (with open bar, no less) to recovering veteran patients at Walter Reed Medical Center. It organizes the dinners, issues the invitations, and provides transportation and help negotiating the not-very-amputee-friendly location. The restaurant and its volunteers also provide a friendly face and ear during the other six days of the week for any veteran who needs them.

At least, they did until the Hilton, who owns the space occupied for years by O'Brien's, decided to evict the restaurant (with all of two week's notice) for "business reasons." Could it be that all of those limbless soldiers limping in once a week were putting a slight crimp on the hotel's business?

The Louisiana Technology Council writes, "The City has had a long-standing tradition of saluting military members in the local area in the form of an Armed Forces Day Luncheon (dating back to 1946). The luncheon was not on the schedule this year. However, the Greater New Orleans Council of Navy League has elected to host this year's luncheon not only to keep that tradition alive, but more importantly to honor those who have done so much over the course of the past year for our fair city and our great nation... We simply can't let that heroism and dedication go without taking time to say thanks to these wonderful servicemen and women for a job well done."

So to honor our military, the LTC and the Navy League has elected to hit them up for $28/head if you're in uniform, to attend a luncheon in your honor. Way to go! I can't wait to be honored myself... I hope I can afford it!

Army Bans Soldier/Family/Private-Purchased Body Armor

Soldiers will no longer be allowed to wear body armor other than the protective gear issued by the military, Army officials said Thursday, the latest twist in a running battle over the equipment the Pentagon gives its troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The army claims that they don't want non-military-approved body armor on their troops, but common sense dictates that if a troop is asking his family to send him body armor, it's likely because he doesn't have any in the first place!

As some of you may have heard, before last night's State of the Union address, invited guest Cindy Sheehan was arrested and detained. Her crime? Wearing a T-shirt that said "2245 Dead -- How many more?" Apparently "free speech" is not protected within the House of Representatives. "Demonstrating" in the House gallery is prohibited--though I have to wonder how wearing a shirt with letters on it is "demonstrating."

Although news reports say that Ms. Sheehan ignored instructions to close her jacket and quiet down, she tells the story a bit differently. Oh, if only there had been a few news cameras at the event to catch it all on tape!

Troops and civilians at a U.S. military base in Iraq were exposed to contaminated water last year and employees for the responsible contractor, Halliburton, couldn't get their company to inform camp residents, according to interviews and internal company documents.

Halliburton, the company formerly headed by Vice President Dick Cheney, disputes the allegations about water problems at Camp Junction City, in Ramadi, even though they were made by its own employees and documented in company e-mails. Unfortunately the person discovering the contaminated water was actually the company's water treatment and testing expert, and not the company's minister of information. Everyone obviously knows by now, the public relations department are the only ones who know the real truth, right?

In an effort to deal with continually-declining enlistment rates, the military is changing its strategy. It's latest ad campaign features a proud father who is impressed his son, returning from service, looks him in the eye and shakes his hand. A sharp contrast from traditional PSA's directed at parents that encourage them to protect their children from harm like drugs, alcohol and sex, the army's newest campaign promotes military service as some kind of "attitude adjustment system" in order to motivate parents to encourage their children to enlist.

This is excellent news for all the baby boomers who have been asking themselves if there was anything else they could do besides put down liberals and slap a ribbon on the back of their SUV.

And there's even more good news. The Army wants to introduce their own affiliate program where you can get $1000-$2500 to convince someone else to join and get through basic training! No word yet regarding any free iPods though.

Soldier Leonard Clark Arrested In Iraq

A major voice in blogspace from the war front in Iraq has been self-proclaimed liberal soldier Leonard Clark, who maintained a blog of his activities and views while on patrol. He's now been arrested. There's lots of speculation over what the military's intent is on this issue. Some feel they're trying to stifle any public voice of dissent or disapproval from their ranks. The military claims that Clark was involved in illegal campaign activities which are a violation of some of their rules.

It's worth debating whether: a) There really is any national security at risk here, and if so, is the nature of what constitutes a "national security risk" overly broad and restrictive of free speech rights? b) Is ones' credibility damaged if they appear to be critical of current events while at the same time looking to enter politics? The problem I had with Clark's blog was that it was hard to give his criticisms as much legitimacy when it seemed he was using his embedded position to promote a potential political career.
