A U.S. Marine Sargeant was ordered to put a stop to an online auction which would have allowed the winner to pick the name the young Marine would legally assume. Sgt. Cody Baker might have become Sgt. Finest Freshest Fastest or Sgt. Mr. Clean although the winning bidder at the time the auction ended was FreebieStore.com with a bid of 30,000.01. Apparently the Dept. of Defense was not amused (is anyone surprised?).

[Beating Dead Horses]
President George W. "I Am the Decider!" Bush is delaying until some time in January his planned report to the nation on the direction he and aides are charting for the United States in Iraq. Meanwhile the American soldier death toll in Iraq is nearing 3000, tens of thousands of Americans injured, and reports of upwards of 500,000 dead Iraqis. But hey, what's another month... listen to what even CNN is saying now about "The Decider!"

Consumer loans to service members will be limited to 36 percent annual interest next year under a law President Bush signed Tuesday that is aimed at storefront lenders clustered around military bases.

And you thought our president wasn't taking care of the troops. Shame on you!

U.S. In Iraq Until 2010?

The top officer of the Army, chief of staff Gen. Peter J. Schoomaker, has announced that there are plans to keep the current level of troops in Iraq, about fifteen brigades, the same through 2010. He was quick to point out that the plan doesn't mean things are going poorly but that he has to "have enough ammo in the magazine that I can continue to shoot as long as they want us to shoot." Given the current morale level of our forces and the dropping standards for admission into the Army (reported here at bsalert), let us hope that the magazine isn't full of blanks.

The Secret Letter From Iraq

A Marine's letter home, with its frank description of life in "Dante's inferno," has been circulating through generals' in-boxes.

Written last month, this straightforward account of life in Iraq by a Marine officer was initially sent just to a small group of family and friends. His honest but wry narration and unusually frank dissection of the mission contrasts sharply with the story presented by both sides of the Iraq war debate, the Pentagon spin masters and fierce critics. Perhaps inevitably, the 'Letter from Iraq' moved quickly beyond the small group of acquantainaces and hit the inboxes of retired generals, officers in the Pentagon, and staffers on Capitol Hill.

Army Continues To Lower Standards To Meet Recruitment Goals

The U.S. Army recruited more than 2,600 soldiers under new lower aptitude standards this year, helping the service beat its goal of 80,000 recruits in the throes of an unpopular war and mounting casualties.

"Tests don't tell you the answer to the most critical question for the Army, how will you do in combat?" a spokesman said. But, he added, accepting too many recruits with low test scores could increase training costs and leave technical jobs unfilled. But don't worry, it's only your tax dollars.

U.S. Citizens At Risk For Military Testing?

It barely made news last week when Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne called for the testing of nonlethal weaponry on US citizens in crowd-control situations. According to Wynne, "If we're not willing to use it here against our fellow citizens, then we should not be willing to use it in a wartime situation."

But it’s naïve to think that once developed, US military weapons will only be used against foreign populations. The Bush administration’s "you’re with us or against us" mentality leaves little room for domestic dissent, and as the line blurs between military and national security technologies, folks back home will find themselves increasingly targeted.

After the September 11 terrorist attacks, Gary Weddle followed the news so closely he forgot to shave. After a week he decided not to shave until Osama bin Laden was caught or killed.

Nor has Weddle, 46, who expected the al Qaeda leader to be caught within a month or so, trimmed his facial hair in the succeeding five years as he went from substitute teacher to science instructor at Ephrata Middle School.

At the start of each school year he gives students a brief explanation of his goofy beard and a lesson in irony, futility and politics.

Invasion of Iraq Has Now Claimed More Lives Than 9/11

While President Bush can't seem to make up his mind how to spin the Iraq invasion in the face of the 9/11 attacks, one thing seems ominously poignant: More Americans have now died in Iraq than died on 9/11. R.J. Eskow writes, "Iraq didn't attack us on that day, and our misguided policy there has now taken more American lives than Al Qaeda.

Here are the numbers: 3,015 Americans have died in Iraq as of September 9. 2,666 of these were military deaths and 349 were civilians. Who knows how many innocent Iraqis have been killed. The government doesn't seem to care enough to keep accurate numbers."

Congress Raises Minimum Age of Soldiers to 42

How to address the growing problem: not enough people are signing up for the armed forces to keep waging this war in Iraq. Bonuses don't seem to be helping, and they've turned to keeping soldiers for extra tours of duty because they can't replace them. (Be All that You Can Be...for two or three times as long as you signed up for.)

But now Congress has solved the problem! Yes, it's raised the maximum age to serve in the U.S. Army yet again, this time to 42. For the first time, we can actually have a multi-generational army! Think of the morale boost of fathers and sons serving side-by-side on the battlefield! (And let's not forget those moms...the age raise applies to women soldiers, too! That's one way to avoid future Cindy Sheehans.)

The US military investigated building a "gay bomb", which would make enemy soldiers "sexually irresistible" to each other, government papers say.

Other weapons that never saw the light of day include one to make soldiers obvious by their bad breath.

The US defense department considered various non-lethal chemicals meant to disrupt enemy discipline and morale.

The 1994 plans were for a six-year project costing $7.5m, but they were never pursued.

Let's say that you're one of the brave soldiers who have served your country honorably, earning yourself the right to a few veteran's benefits for your service. What's one way your Veteran's Administration can thank you?

Why, lose the personal information of as many as 26.5 million of you, of course. Names, birth dates, social security numbers...exactly what you'd need to steal the identity of a hardworking veteran with decent credit. Hey, who wants to open a credit card on Private Johnson's account?

United Airlines has begun showing an in-flight video about military glamor jobs that was produced and funded by the Department of Defense--a fact passengers do not learn from watching it.

Sandwiched between NBC sitcoms and Discovery Channel previews, "Today's Military," as the 13-minute program is called, highlights five jobs that few members of the armed forces could point to as their own.

It shows only one soldier beyond U.S. borders, who's "doing humanitarian work in Thailand" -- a remarkable focus at a time of war. The Defense Department paid United $36,000 to run the video for one month.

Troop-Supporting Steakhouse Losing Its Lease

For all of the empty words and useless posturing that most people mean when they say they "support the troops," Fran O'Brien's Stadium Steakhouse in DC, located in the basement of the Capital Hilton, gives free weekly steak dinners (with open bar, no less) to recovering veteran patients at Walter Reed Medical Center. It organizes the dinners, issues the invitations, and provides transportation and help negotiating the not-very-amputee-friendly location. The restaurant and its volunteers also provide a friendly face and ear during the other six days of the week for any veteran who needs them.

At least, they did until the Hilton, who owns the space occupied for years by O'Brien's, decided to evict the restaurant (with all of two week's notice) for "business reasons." Could it be that all of those limbless soldiers limping in once a week were putting a slight crimp on the hotel's business?

The Louisiana Technology Council writes, "The City has had a long-standing tradition of saluting military members in the local area in the form of an Armed Forces Day Luncheon (dating back to 1946). The luncheon was not on the schedule this year. However, the Greater New Orleans Council of Navy League has elected to host this year's luncheon not only to keep that tradition alive, but more importantly to honor those who have done so much over the course of the past year for our fair city and our great nation... We simply can't let that heroism and dedication go without taking time to say thanks to these wonderful servicemen and women for a job well done."

So to honor our military, the LTC and the Navy League has elected to hit them up for $28/head if you're in uniform, to attend a luncheon in your honor. Way to go! I can't wait to be honored myself... I hope I can afford it!

Army Bans Soldier/Family/Private-Purchased Body Armor

Soldiers will no longer be allowed to wear body armor other than the protective gear issued by the military, Army officials said Thursday, the latest twist in a running battle over the equipment the Pentagon gives its troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The army claims that they don't want non-military-approved body armor on their troops, but common sense dictates that if a troop is asking his family to send him body armor, it's likely because he doesn't have any in the first place!
