Ten Commandment Statues Are Really Taxpayer Money Grabs

Within days of the controversial Ten Commandments monument erected on the courthouse grounds in Arkansas, it was destroyed by an irate citizen. Beyond the obvious controversy of the state endorsing a particular flavor of religion, what seems to be going on with municipalities continuing to put up these displays when there's overwhelming evidence they will be rules unconstitutional and taken down?

Filed public documents in the Akansas case make it very clear: This is a thinly-veiled attempt to funnel taxpayer money to select private religious legal groups...

The Supreme Court says corporations can hold religious objections that allow them to opt out of the new health law requirement that they cover contraceptives for women.

The justices’ 5-4 decision Monday is the first time that the high court has ruled that profit-seeking businesses can hold religious views under federal law. And it means the Obama administration must search for a different way of providing free contraception to women who are covered under objecting companies’ health insurance plans.

Contraception is among a range of preventive services that must be provided at no extra charge under the health care law that President Barack Obama signed in 2010 and the Supreme Court upheld two years later.

The Daily show calls attention to a "Battle for the War on Women." While multiple states roll back the equal pay and health rights that women have come to enjoy, Fox News relegates the "war on women" to the rank of "phony" political fight. And in the process, one of their bits enrages the Catholic League, (the same guy who claimed victims of child abuse are a bunch of greedy, bigoted whiners), which prompts Delta Airlines to pull their ads from the show.

Jon Stewart's response? "I’m not going to censor myself to comfort your ignorance." Check out the offending video...

All but six have been older than 10, according to a Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services analysis. Now lawmakers are rushing to change the law while parents are rushing to Nebraska to drop their kids off before the law changes.

According Doug Wead, former Bush family evangelical adviser, Copeland and his supporters at the conference raised $111,000 in cash for Huckabee, with about a million dollars in pledged donations, after he temporarily adjourned the conference and then reconvened the group as a "private meeting."

Here's one of those talks that can change your view of the world forever. Starting with the deceptively simple story of an ant, Dan Dennett unleashes a dazzling sequence of ideas, making a powerful case for the existence of "memes" -- a term coined by Richard Dawkins for mental concepts that are literally alive and capable of spreading from brain to brain. On the way, look out for:
+ a powerful one-sentence secret of happiness
+ a compelling insight into terrorists' motivation
+ a chilling view of Islam
And just when you think you know where the talk's heading, it dramatically shifts direction and questions some of western culture's fundamental assumptions. This. Is. Unmissable.

At the funeral a small number of protesters had gathered to signal their disgust with the likes of Falwell, which didn't sit too well with some of his students at Liberty University (sic), so they staged a counter-protest. Hypocrisy is a word that gets thrown around A LOT these days, mostly in political circles. But how would one define hypocrisy? Sure, I could look it up in a dictionary but that takes too long and could potentially involve paper cuts. Let us instead cast about for examples in modern life. Take, for example, a man who strongly believes (and says it loudly) that those who sit on the far right of the political spectrum have the strongest moral fiber, the best values. No, THIS is not hypocrisy (merely delusion)--what IS hypocrisy is to do so while doing what he's being charged with doing to little girls.

Let's say you're a major American news organization. You bend over backwards to make yourself "the most trusted name in news" or something like that. And maybe, during a news show, you do a story on discrimination against a minority group. This is serious stuff--people being harassed, forced to leave town, their jobs threatened--all because they don't fit into the majority group.

After a few quotes from the oppressed minority, you have a panel on to discuss the alleged discrimination. Who do you have on the panel? Some civil rights organization, perhaps? A professor who studies marginalized groups? You'd probably want a representative of the minority group, right? And this being a fair representation of a controversial issue, of course you'd have one person to represent those who don't see discrimination in these cases.

Unless you're CNN. And the minority is the most hated one in America. (No, not Islamic terrorists. They're all hunky-dory by comparison.)
